FPL’s solar rebate program begins taking applications on June 21, 2011–precisely 1 week from today! Many people here in Florida are excited and ready to jump at the chance to put solar power in their home or business. But where should you start? And what do you need to know?  We at the US Solar Institute and Florida Solar One are here to help.

What are the new solar programs being offered by FPL?  There are 7 new programs, including a research program, all designed to spur clean energy investment in the state of Florida. They are:

  1. Residential solar hot water heating – Onetime $1,000 rebate for installing a thermal system.
  2. Residential PV – Onetime rebate of $2.00 per watt of DC output, up to $20,000.
  3. Solar low-income new construction – Solar LINC-Partnership with not-for-profit low-income housing units. FPL will provide full installation cost per premise.
  4. Business solar water heating – Variable one time rebate based on the size of the system installed. Rebate is up to $50,000 per premise during program life. Customers with multiple premises can receive up to $150,000 per program year.
  5. Business PV – Variable onetime rebate based on the size of the system installed. Rebate is up to $50,000 per premise during program life. Customers with multiple premises can receive up to $150,000 per program year.
  6. Solar schools – FPL will install solar PV arrays on public school as both energy producing programs and educational programs for students.
  7. Renewable research and demonstration – Program that allows FPL to conduct a series of demonstrations and renewable technology research projects to increase awareness of solar technologies and understanding and quantify energy effectiveness of emerging renewable technologies and their applications.

So who is eligible to apply for rebates? Existing FPL account holders, school districts, and not-for-profit low income-housing builders can work directly with FPL to participate in SolarLINC program.

How will FPL decide who is approved? FPL will take applications on a first come, first served basis and will evaluate them based on conformance with the application standards and requirements. Applicants that meet these standards will receive reservations for rebates until funding limit has been met for the year. Having a reservation does not guarantee, but rather means that funds have been reserved. Actual payment depends on final verification by FPL that the installed system and documents meet the applicable program standards and requirements.
