From June 18 to June 22, US Solar Institute (USSI), in partnership with Underwriters Laboratories (UL), is hosting an exclusive, one-time solar PV electrical training seminar to prepare students for the UL PV Certified Installer Exam held on June 22.

The primary focus of this special 5-day workshop will be on the National Electrical Code (NEC) and its many applications within the solar PV industry.  Given the growing number and complexity of installations across the country, safety must play an increasingly important role to ensure that poor workmanship doesn’t hold the solar industry back.

USSI’s Lead Instructor, Ray Johnson will co-host this one-time event with UL’s Senior Electrical Instructor, Mark Ode.

According to Johnson, “Underwriters Laboratories is the world’s leading safety authority, and Mark is one of the most knowledgeable electricians on the National Electric Code Book’s subject matter.”  He adds. “He’s been a panelist for the Book for 25 years.”

According to US Solar Institute’s site, the solar PV installation training will feature over 300kWs of bi-modal, grid-tied, and off-grid live operation system instruction using equipment from some of the top names in the solar industry.  Students who attend this event will work with solar components supplied by SMA, Schneider Electric, Solar Edge, Solar Pathfinder, Outback, Quick Mount PV, Unistrut, and Unirac.

Topics to be covered include:

  • 2011 National Electrical Code, Article 690
  • BOS type, size, and selection
  • Engineering solar system size, cost, and performance
  • Solar disconnecting
  • Safety start-up sequences
  • System maintenance and operation
  • Conductors & OCP

After completing their electrical code training, students will be prepared to sit for the Underwriters Certified Solar Installer Exam – the highest such recognition within the industry.  The exam will be hosted on-site on June 22 – the last day of the joint solar workshop.

Students who sign up early pay a special discounted rate of $1,695.  However, space is limited, so be sure to register today in order to reserve your spot for this one-time event.
