USSI and Florida Keys Solar One President Joins FKCC Board
President Johnson becomes the newest advisor to the Florida Keys Community College Alternative Energy Technician Program in 2018
Key West, FL October 4, 2017 – Ray Johnson, the internationally popular Florida solar energy professor and President of state certified solar energy contractor Florida Keys Solar One, recently accepted a role at the Florida Keys based community college advisory board funded by a near million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation.
Professor Johnson, founder of The US Solar Institute (USSI), a vocational college licensed by the Florida Department of Education, credits Hurricane Andrew (in 1992) as the driving force for his obsession with solar energy. “I saw solar panels as the best energy solution for our family in Sugarloaf Key. The storm forced me to become an instant student of solar photovoltaics (PV) and I have never really stopped studying since.”
Johnson says he is proud to help serve FKCC as an advisor to help develop this NSF funded Associate of Science Renewable Energy Technician program by giving back and sharing his success in the solar industry while helping the Keys community.
FKCC and their students are likely to benefit from Johnson’s participation if his success in the solar energy industry follows him to campus. After founding USSI in 2008, Johnson grew it to become one of the most successful advanced solar training colleges in the US and Caribbean. The college’s alumni count in the thousands and span the globe. USSI made Inc. Magazine’s list of America’s fastest growing companies from 2012 thru 2015 coming in at #1,245 in the nation and #7 in Florida.
Johnson is also the instructional designer, author, and founding solar workshop instructor for globally leading National Research and Testing Laboratory, Underwriter’s Laboratory or UL. “Being selected to partner with and instruct solar training programs for UL has been one of the greatest privileges of my career. My experience with UL may help in working with FKCC to build a program for an industry and community we all love”.
