USSI Opens Jamaica Branch for a second Solar PV Training Campus, allowing residents to receive Florida Department of Education-licensed solar PV installation training and certification.
Kingston, Jamaica – July 1, 2013 – This August, Jamaica will receive its first-ever Department of Education-licensed solar PV installation courses. USSolar Institute to Open Branch Solar PV Training Campus in Jamaica
USSI regularly receives Jamaican students at its Fort Lauderdale campus in Florida. In fact, Jamaica is only 2nd to the US in terms of alumni, with many prominent residents of the island nation holding USSI diplomas and solar certifications.
But with flights and accommodations – the trek is prohibitively expensive for many would-be solar installers. By establishing a Kingston, Jamaica campus, USSI will be able to make its solar installation training more affordable for area residents.
The timing of USSI’s launch is no accident. Jamaica has long sat on the sidelines of the solar industry, relying almost exclusively on imported oil to power its economy. But faced with a crippling trade deficit, Jamaica’s Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Phillip Paulwell, has spearheaded several solar initiatives that have really boosted demand for PV installations.
USSI’s President and Lead Instructor, Ray Johnson believes that for Jamaica’s solar industry to succeed, it must have a well-trained solar energy workforce able to keep pace with this rising demand.
“We wanted to launch this campus sooner, but the timing was never right.” Johnson adds, “Thanks to Minister Paulwell’s initiatives, Jamaica is on the cusp of a true solar revolution, and USSI is committed to developing the local solar panel installation and manufacturing talent required to ensure her success.”
